Tree nursery in Gituru

For many years it has been a popular tradition that a tree planting campaign takes place when the pupils of the Peter August Böckstiegel Comprehensive School visit the Kenyan partner school, the Gituru Secondary School.

During the last encounter trip to Kenya in 2019, more than 3000 seedlings were planted over several days. This is an action that takes place in cooperation with the partner school, the environmental protection organization Friends of Kinangop and the national park management. The German and Kenyan students actively support the reforestation of the rainforest in the national park „The Aberdare Mountains“. We obtained the seedlings for this campaign from a tree nursery.
During our Online exChange in January 2022, the thought arose as to whether it might not be possible to install such a tree nursery at Gituru Secondary School. We have now expanded the idea on the Kenyan side in recent months, obtained expertise and created a realistic plan. Thanks to the donations from Germany, the school is now able to take the first steps towards realization together with the Friends of Kinangop. A suitable plot of land was found on the school premises, plans were made to integrate the tree nursery work into the curriculum for the subject „Agriculture“ and, above all, there was a solution to the main problem: irrigation. A plan was developed so that sufficient rainwater can be collected during the rainy season in order to irrigate the plants in the tree nursery during the dry period. However, this requires a large water tank, which can now be purchased and built thanks to the numerous donations.

The benefit of this tree nursery is not only to grow trees for the reforestation campaigns of the upcoming encounter trips, but also to incorporate the topics of environmental protection, ecology and biodiversity into everyday school life. On a permanent basis, this nursery also grows plants that are offered for sale to the local population. This helps to increase diversity with (native) plants on site and gives the school a source of income that makes it financially more independent of government subsidies or donations for its diverse tasks.

Baumschule in Gituru (Übersetzung)

Seit vielen Jahren ist es eine beliebte Tradition, dass bei den Besuchen der Schüler:innen der Peter August Böckstiegel Gesamtschule an der kenianischen Partnerschule, der Gituru Secondary School, eine Baumpflanzaktion stattfindet. So wurden bei der letzten Begegnungsreise nach Kenia im Jahre 2019 über mehrere Tage hinweg mehr als 3000 Setzlinge gepflanzt. Dies ist eine Aktion, die in Kooperation mit der Partnerschule, der Umweltschutzorganisation Friends of Kinangop und dem Nationalparkmanagement stattfindet. Die deutschen und die kenianischen Schüler:innen unterstützen dabei aktiv im Nationalpark „The Aberdare Mountains“ die Wiederaufforstung des Regenwaldes. Die Setzlinge für diese Aktion haben wir über eine Baumschule bezogen.

Während unseres Online exChange im Januar 2022 entstand der Gedanke, ob es nicht möglich sei, eine solche Baumschule an der Gituru Secondary School zu installieren. Die Idee haben wir nun auf kenianischer Seite in den letzten Monaten ausgebaut, Expertisen eingeholt und eine realistische Planung erstellt. Dank der Spenden aus Deutschland ist die Schule nun in der Lage gemeinsam mit den Friends of Kinangop die ersten Schritte zur Realisierung zu gehen. Ein entsprechendes Grundstück auf dem Schulgelände wurde gefunden, das Einbinden der Baumschularbeiten in den Lehrplan im Unterrichtsfach „Landwirtschaft“ wurde geplant und vor allem gab es eine Lösung für das Hauptproblem: die Bewässerung. Es konnte ein Plan entwickelt werden, dass über die Regenzeit ausreichend Regenwasser gesammelt werden kann, um damit die Pflanzen in der Baumschule während der Trockenperiode zu bewässern. Dazu bedarf es allerdings eines großen Wassertanks, der nun dank der zahlreichen Spendengelder angeschafft und gebaut werden kann.

Der Nutzen dieser Baumschule liegt nicht nur darin, Bäume für die Aufforstungsaktionen der kommenden Workcamps heranzuziehen, sondern auch das Thema Umweltschutz, Ökologie und Biodiversität im Schulalltag einzubauen. Auf Dauer werden in dieser Baumschule auch Pflanzen angebaut, die für die örtliche Bevölkerung zum Verkauf angeboten werden. Dies hilft vor Ort die Diversität mit (einheimischen) Pflanzen zu erhöhen und gibt der Schule eine Einnahmequelle, die sie für ihre vielfältigen Aufgaben finanziell unabhängiger macht von staatlichen Subventionen oder Spenden.
